As we start a new year, we say good buy to two parish councillor’s, Caroline Capjon and Kylie Hughes. The parish council would like to thank them for their service and wish them all the best for the future.
We welcome three new councillors, Cllr Adam Greaves, Cllr Liann Barnet and Cllr Patrick Hickey, all were successfully co-opted at the annual parish council meeting on 7th May 2024. Also at the same meeting the current chairman Cllr Rosemary Wildblood decided to hang her chairman hat up, many thanks go to Rosemary for her hard work and diligence in the role. Our new chairman from 7th May 2024 will be Cllr Hugo Wildblood.
Anyone who walks around Burston and Aston and even pilgrims who have walked Two Saints Way from Lichfield to Chester will be only too familiar with the bridge crossing the River Trent at Burston. It is in fact not the first bridge at this point on the river, it replaced an older wooden bridge in 1952.
The crossing is also used as an access point into the river for canoeists, paddle boarders and swimming dogs, to name but a few users.
Sadly a large willow tree growing right alongside the bridge fell into the river following storms in October last year where it lay for some time. This was reported to the relevant authorities with the hope that it would be removed as a matter of urgency as it was causing a build up of detritus behind it and was slowly damming the river, particularly in heavy rain.
Unfortunately nothing was done to remove the tree and in a period of particularly heavy rain there was such a build up of water behind the tree that the pressure actually moved the tree against the bridge and this pressure caused the bridge to be pushed off its foundation on its western bank into the river itself. The movement of the tree has opened up the river course again reducing the danger of flooding in the village but it now means that the footpath from Aston to Burston and the pilgrimage route can no longer be walked.
We are told by the authorities that the intention is to reinstate the bridge but that this will need considerable planning and expenditure. The work will need to be done in dry weather when the ground is hard enough to allow vehicular access, so it is hoped that this will be over Summer 2024, otherwise it will slip into 2025, disappointing many local people and pilgrims from further afield.
Sandon and Burston Parish Council are making representations to all of those authorities who have input into the situation and will update its website whenever there is news to report.
In a heart-warming display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, residents of Sandon Village recently came together for a collective effort to clean up their streets. With a shared commitment to preserving the beauty of their surroundings, volunteers armed with gloves, bags, and determination took to the streets for a litter pick and pavement clean-up initiative.
Community involvement is key to maintaining the cleanliness and charm of any neighbourhood. By organizing events like the litter pick and pavement clean in Sandon Village, residents not only beautify their surroundings but also foster a sense of unity and pride in their community.
On a Sunny Saturday morning, residents of all ages gathered at Sandon parish rooms, ready to roll up their sleeves and make a difference. Equipped with black bags, litter pickers, spades and a shared sense of purpose, the volunteers set out to tackle the litter and silt that had accumulated along the pavements.
The success of the event not only reflects the dedication of Sandon Village residents to their community but also highlights the power of collective action. By taking ownership of their surroundings and actively participating in initiatives like the litter pick and pavement clean, residents demonstrate their commitment to creating a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant village for all.
Although the efforts made a huge difference, we have only managed to tackle around 25 % of the village, we have planned a second phase that will take part on 26th May 2024. If you would like to get involved, please contact Adam Greaves – 07970271116
The Parish Council is aware of concerns relating to the traffic and speed along the major A51 route.
A speed survey was conducted on the A51 in Sandon village, between 19th and 26th April 2023.
The results showed the volume and speed of traffic has not increased since previous surveys conducted in March 2017. The survey showed very little had changed, in an official sense there is no speed issue within the village, 85% vehicles travelling through Sandon, travelled below the speed limit of 40mph.
