Sandon Hall
The Hall is a neo-Jacobean house surrounded by 400 acres of parkland including a notable arboretum. Sandon Hall, the ancestral home of the Earls of Harrowby was rebuilt in 1850 following the devastating fire of the second Sandon Hall in 1848 which also stood on the present site.
The present house was designed by William Burn, the most proven Country House architect of the day. The earlier house was bought in 1776 by Nathaniel Ryder, 1st Baron Harrowby, son of Sir Dudley Ryder, Lord Chief Justice of England.
The current owners are Conroy Ryder, 8th Earl of Harrowby and Caroline Ryder, 8th Countess of Harrowby. They have renovated a public wing and fifty acres of gardens for weddings.
Two Saints Way
Two Saints Way is a 92-mile pilgrimage route between the cathedral cities of Chester and Lichfield. The route can be walked from either the north or the south, through the beautiful countryside of Cheshire and Staffordshire along footpaths, canal paths and lanes which link the villages, towns and cities along the way.
The route passes through Burston. More information on the Two Saints Way can be found here
The footpath was closed in 2019 following heavy rain swelling the stream that runs adjacent to the footpath from the centre of the village to the Trent and Mersey canal.
The flood damage swept away the supporting structure to the side of the footpath, soil and ballast making the footpath unsafe. Staffordshire County Council closed the footpath until funding was identified and the footpath repaired. The Parish Council are very grateful to the County Council for funding the footpath repairs. The footpath was re-opened in February 2021.
