Local Government Reorganisation - Government decision

Stafford Borough Council have provided the following update on the Government decision regarding Local Government Reorganisation:

The government has today confirmed its decision on local government reorganisation in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

It will see two new unitary councils covering areas, as follows:

• Unitary in South and Mid-Staffordshire – Cannock Chase, Stafford Borough, East Staffordshire, Lichfield, South Staffordshire and Tamworth
• Unitary in the North – Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire Moorlands and Newcastle-under-Lyme

The two new councils will replace Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent’s ten existing county, city, district and borough councils, and they will be responsible for delivering all council services including Waste Collections, Children’s Services, Planning, Adult Social Care, Highways and more.

This decision follows the submission of five proposals by councils in November 2025, alongside a public consultation which ran in February and March 2025.

Under the government’s timetable, the new councils are expected to be established in April 2028, with elections to shadow councils held in May 2027. 

There is now a lot of work to do in partnership with neighbouring councils to get the new authorities ready. We will work together to develop detailed plans for delivery, including arrangements for transition and future governance.

It is important to note that there will be no immediate change to council services, and residents should continue to access services and support in the same way as they do now.
